Toddler "Republic" Pattern

I've received multiple e-mail requests for this pattern. Here it is.

Materials Needed:
I used TLC Ultra Soft 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn in "Butterscotch",
5oz per skein. I don't know if this yarn is still available, but any worsted weight yarn will do.

Size US 8, 16 inch circulars and US 8 double pointed needles (dpns) (You will change to dpns if circumference gets too small to knit with circulars.)

Tapestry Needle

1.5" Button (I bought this one from Walmart)

Gauge: 4.5 sts and 6 rows per inch

Final Circumference of hat is 18"
------------------------------
Instructions:

(Note: You will start by knitting a flat garter stitch rectangle that will be joined for knitting in the round.)

Cast on 93 stitches
Row 1 (RS): Knit entire row.
Row 2 (WS): Knit entire row.

Continue working in garter stitch for 2 inches, ending with a wrong side row

(RS) Bind off 13 sts (80 sts remain). Knit to end of row. DO NOT TURN. You will now join for knitting in the round.

Place marker to mark the beginning of the round and join by knitting the first stitch after the bound off section.

Continue knitting each round until the hat measures 5 inches from cast on edge.

Crown Shaping:

(K8, K2TOG) to end.
(K7, K2TOG) to end.
(K6, K2TOG) to end.
(K5, K2TOG) to end.
(K4, K2TOG) to end.
(K3, K2TOG) to end.
(K2, K2TOG) to end.
(K1, K2TOG) to end.
(K2TOG) to end.

Finishing:

Cut yarn end and weave through the remaining 8 stitches twice with tapestry needle.
Secure the “garter flap” (created from the 13 st bind off) to the hat by sewing the button to the flap through both layers.
Weave in ends.

I made this hat last night for my 1.5 year old. It's easy and adorable. She loves it.

Cute hat, can it be made smaller? How many to cast on?

When you say, ending wrong side row, how do you know which is the wrong side when both sides are knit? Tk you!

Hi Nancy,

I'm assuming you're talking about the garter stitch band. Assume the first row is the right side row. I should change the pattern to make that clear. Thanks for the question!

No mention if hat is for children, if so what ages?

Hi Barbie,

I list the circumference of the hat in the pattern. It's 18" in circumference. It was designed to fit a toddler. Thanks!
